Play Mode Requirements for InspectMe Features
Why Play Mode?
InspectMe is designed to provide real-time data collection and manipulation, which is only possible in Unity's play mode. In play mode, you can observe and interact with the dynamic changes to values, offering a comprehensive understanding of your application's behavior as it runs. Here are some key reasons why play mode is essential for most InspectMe features.
-
Real-time Data Collection
During play mode, the Unity engine actively processes scripts, animations, physics, and other runtime components. This enables InspectMe to gather and display real-time data, which is crucial for debugging and optimizing your application. -
Dynamic Value Manipulation
Play mode allows you to interact with live data and see the immediate impact of changes. This is particularly useful for testing and tweaking values to achieve desired behaviors without the need to constantly stop and restart the game. -
Runtime Behavior Analysis
Many issues in game development only manifest during runtime. Play mode provides the environment needed to observe and analyze these behaviors, helping you identify and resolve problems that are not apparent in edit mode.
Unity’s edit mode is designed for setting up your scene, adjusting properties, and preparing your game objects. At this stage, the scripts are not actively running, and therefore, the dynamic values that InspectMe is built to observe and debug are not active or changing. InspectMe shines when your game is running, and you need to debug or inspect the values that change as a result of interactions, behaviors, and game logic in real-time.
Allowing InspectMe to function in edit mode wouldn’t provide any benefits because it is specifically tailored for inspecting the runtime behavior of your game. It helps you monitor how values and states change over time, which is crucial for debugging complex issues that only arise while the game is in action.
